INDEPENDENT businesses in Hoylake have launched a petition against sandwich chain Subway opening in the town over fears it will destroy the area.

Subway has submitted a planning application to Wirral Council for illuminated signage on the former Lamb & Co solicitors’ office in Market Street.

Existing businesses received a letter from the council last week informing them of the plans but many are upset at the news and fear the impact it will have.

Sally and Martin Newby, owners of family-run bakery Fahy’s, have set up a petition, which they say has already received massive support from neighbouring businesses.

“There is no need for a Subway in Hoylake,” said Martin.

There are already six or seven cafes and four or five chippies.

“It’s going to be open until 10pm, we live above the premises and we’re worried about the noise and the sort of people hanging around, it’s bad enough as it is.”

Martin added: “I know the cafes don’t want it here and it’s going to be right on a zebra crossing – the parking in Hoylake is terrible.”

The petition was set up three days ago and already contains more than 200 signatures.

People who want to sign the petition can do so by calling into Fahy’s or other businesses on Market Street.

Subway’s planning application has been submitted by an agent and seeks permission for one internally illuminated fascia sign and one internally illuminated projecting sign.

The Globe contacted Subway to find out how many jobs will be created and when the store is likely to open but has so far had no response.
