Merseyrail is warning frozen snow has caused major disruptions at Southport, Kirby, Hunts Cross, Ellesmere Port and Chester.

The travel organisation says services on the Wirral line from New Brighton and West Kirby to Liverpool are running normally.

The Southport and Hunts Cross line is blocked.

Train services running through these stations will be suspended between Liverpool South Pw Ll and Hunts Cross.

An estimate for the resumption of normal services will be provided as soon as the problem has been fully assessed.

A rail replacement bus service is currently being arranged.

There are cancellations to services at Ellesmere Port, again due to frozen snow on the live rail at Ellesmere Port and the Ellesmere Port line is blocked.

Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled or suspended between Hooton and Ellesmere Port.

An estimate for the resumption of normal services will be provided as soon as possible

And there are cancellations to services between Rice Lane and Kirkby, the Kirkby line is blocked.

There is major disruption on the M62 with all three lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on the eastbound carriageway at Junction 5 A5080, Huyton.

Congestion is backing up to to Junction 4 at the Rocket, affecting traffic heading away from Liverpool towards Manchester.

Callers are reporting "lots of snow" on the carriageway in the area.

The Met office has issued an amber Level 3 - Cold Weather Action alert for Merseyside.

It says there is high probability of severe cold weather, icy conditions and heavy snow from today until Tuesday, February 3.

The Highways Agency warned of icy roads as temperatures plummet and said its gritters will be out in force.
