GLOBE readers with a passion for volunteering are needed to help with the upkeep of an historic Wirral park.

The first meeting of Friends of Dawstone Park, Heswall, will be held at 7pm, on Wednesday, February 4, at St Peter's Primary School, Heswall.

Its aim is to help maintain Dawstone Park, which opened in 1931 and has a special place at the heart of Heswall.

Wirral Council's South Wirral constituency committee has been working with local amenity group The Heswall Society to establish a Friends' group, which will volunteers to help with the park's maintenance, and enable it to go for Green Flag status, as well as apply for grants and other funding.

Committee chairman, Cllr Phil Gilchrist said: "The financial constraints placed on Wirral and other councils limit what we can now do.

"The council must concentrate on mowing the grass and carrying out emergency tree work. We are very grateful that enthusiastic residents are willing to help with work over and above this.

"The Heswall Society has been working with Wirral South Constituency Committee to support the formation of a Friends’ Group which will be a great advantage when applying for grants.

"I would urge anyone with an interest in this unique asset in Heswall – young and old - to attend this open meeting.

"Community support is needed to help restore the park to its former glory, including tasks such as repairing fences and benches, painting rails and edging paths."
