ROAD safety campaigners have called on the government to invest in the completion of work on a busy stretch of road in Meols.

They voiced their concerns to Minister for Cities and Regional Growth, Greg Clark MP, who visited Heron Road on Thursday, following calls by Wirral West MP Esther McVey for the Saughall Massie by-pass to be completed and relieve traffic congestion at the junction with Birkenhead Road.

The new Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has been given £232 million to invest across the local area and Esther McVey is pushing for Heron Road to be included.

During the meeting, attended by more than 40 residents, Miss McVey said: "This scheme has been gathering dust on a shelf for more than 30 years. As the traffic has increased, so have the problems at Heron Road.

"I want Wirral to receive a fair share of this new money and, together with the £900 million that is being invested across roads in the North West, now is the ideal time to step up our campaign.

"Many residents are rightly worried about their safety on this road – it is frankly ridiculous that some are obliged to literally wave a flag when exiting their drives in order to prevent a collision."

Mr Clark said: "I am grateful to those residents who attended our meeting this afternoon, following requests by Esther that I support this scheme.

"It is clear that this scheme would help local residents and the wider economy.

"Unlocking growth in Wirral is vital to creating more jobs and prosperity and, as I saw for myself today, this junction is a main route for commuters."
