WIRRAL Hospice St John's has been given a £10,000 boost in a cash giveaway as part of Yorkshire Building Society's 150th anniversary.

The charity was one of 15 chosen to receive a share of the £150,000 lasting legacy fund. More than 600 charities applied for cash, but 30 were put forward for a public vote.

Its £10,000 grant will be used to enhance overnight facilities at the hospice, enabling more families and friends to stay with their loved ones at critical times.

Helen Squires, trust fundraiser for the hospice, said: "We are thrilled that our project has been chosen to be funded as part of the Yorkshire Building Society Lasting Legacy Fund.

"We can’t wait to get started and make a real difference to our community."

Neil Gregory, manager at the Wallasey branch of Yorkshire Building Society, said: "We are proud to commemorate our milestone anniversary by helping charities make a positive difference in their communities.

"We are delighted to be able to support Wirral Hospice St John’s project and we are looking forward to seeing the benefits it will bring.

"To be chosen from over 600 charity projects shows that this is a project that has really resonated with the public and will deliver a tangible benefit to the local community."
