AROUND 5,000 people in are without water this morning after a major pipe-burst in Birkenhead.
Repairs have been underway since 4am, and temporary traffic lights are in place on Borough Road at Prenton Road East and Prenton Road West, near Tranmere Rovers Prenton Park ground, causing long delays.
A United Utilities spokesman told BBC Radio Merseyside: “The water is currently off for around 5,000 people.
“We are bringing water in through other pipes, which is taking time to recharge the main.
"There are two high-voltage cables belonging to National Grid and we have had to get National Grid out to observe as we go.
“A traffic light management system had to go in place. This will cause delays this morning and probably for the rest of the day.
“The good news is that water will be coming back on soon.”
He said the problem was down to an old Victorian water pipe, which has burst.
