TESCO have submitted revised plans for a convenience store on the site of a former car showroom in Wallasey.

The supermarket chain is, once again, asking Wirral Council for permission to build a convenience store, believed to be a Tesco Express, on the former Classic Cars of Wirral site in Wallasey Village.

It is the third application, in as many years, for this site. A second application was refused last year, following a campaign from local residents and businesses. A 1,200-strong petition was gathered in a bid to prevent approval.

Cllr Leah Fraser, who supported the last campaign to said: "Here we go again! Local residents have made it quite clear in the past that they don't want a retail store in Wallasey Village by inundating the planning department with objections; a 1,200 signed petition, letters and emails expressing their views. Now a third, revised application has been received.

"Not only will it make parking worse, it will also draw more money away from local traders and swell the coffers of London-based Tesco.

"Tesco need to realise they cannot use their size to push everyone else out of the way as they try to recover their market share.

"There is a large, recently refurbished mega Tesco at Bidston. The village does not need Tesco – we need to attract more customers to all the existing stores not just suck in all the trade to one store".

After Tesco's last application was refused, lead petitioner Purdeep Chahal said councillors had made the right decision by not backing down to the supermarket giant.

Mr Chahal said: "The way I see it is that Tesco always get what they want but this shows that when you fight them, you can actually win.

"We all hope that they will stay away now and realise that Wallasey Village doesn’t need a Tesco."
