PUPILS from two Wirral schools joined Tesco staff on a community clean-up operation in Birkenhead North today.
Taking place in the area known as the Norman Street triangle, it involved pupils from nearby Portland Primary and Ridgeway School in Noctorum.
It had been organised by Debbie Layfield, community champion at Bidston Tesco. The teams went into back alleyways and picked up nine skips' worth of rubbish.
Debbie told the Globe: "The whole area needed a clean-up and we were more than happy to help collect all the rubbish. We filled nine skips, which is an impressive amount.
"The neighbours were glad that we were doing this and have been out to see how we were getting on and to show their support. The clean-up was something they said they really needed.
"It's really brought the community together.
"I also want to say a big thank you to Tesco staff, who came in on their day off to help."
The community team went door to door informing the residents that there will be skips left in each street at certain times during the week. The aim is to keep entries and alleyways clear and hopefully stop people from fly tipping.
Supporting the campaign was mayor, Steve Foulkes. He said: "I think it's a fantastic idea. The council is working hard to tackle the problems of fly-tipping.
"The message is out there and it's great that people are helping to tackle the problem."
