A WIRRAL school has paid tribute to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice by creating their very own field of poppies.

Each pupil and member of staff at Hayfield School in Upton made a paper mache, with more than 120 of them placed on the school's field on Armistice Day.

Deputy headteacher Sue Wilson said the idea came after seeing the exhibition at the Tower of London, which has seen more than 888,000 cermanic poppies "planted".

"A lot of the children have never been to London so we thought it would be really nice to create our own exhibition," said Ms Wilson.

"We've also had our Remembrance Service this morning and we've had people from the Heritage group come in to do a World War One day which saw the children making trenches.

"This morning's service als gave the children a really good idea of what it's like and they even wrote letters as though they were soldiers in WWI."
