A WOMAN had to be rescued from a bonfire after she fell in as she tried to run across it during a Bonfire Night event in Wirral.

The 25-year-old had been enjoying the celebrations at the Farmers Arms pub in Frankby when the incident happened at around 12.20am on Thursday.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was called to the Hillbark Road pub  and put out the bonfire, with a total of three ambulances, senior manager and rapid response vehicle also in attendance.

The fire service said a 50-year-old man, and the 25-year-old woman were taken to Whiston Hospital.

Station manager Mark Thomas, who attended the scene, said: “It appears, according to those who were at the scene, that a woman had attempted to run across a bonfire when she accidentally tripped and fell into the burning debris.

“A man was also treated for burns at the scene after pulling the woman from the bonfire embers and patting out flames on her clothes.

“Firefighters who attended from Upton Community Fire Station did a very good job calming the woman at the scene and assisting the sole paramedic at the location before the ambulance arrived.

“Bonfires can be extremely dangerous, particularly street bonfires, and no-one should try to jump over or run through a bonfire, even if it appears the bonfire flames are almost out.

“Firefighters had visited this site at around 10pm on November 5 and there were cordons in place around the bonfire and there was no danger to persons or property at that time.”

Firefighters assisted a paramedic by applying burn shields to the woman’s legs and arms at the scene, before the arrival of an ambulance.

An investigation by the Incident Investigation Team at Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service into this incident and the injuries is ongoing.
