WHAT role can music play if you’re feeling unwell or down?

BBC Radio 2 brought its Good Morning Sunday show, presented by Clare Balding, to Arrowe Park Hospital to understand more about the healing power of music.

As part of Radio 2's annual Faith in the World Week 2014, this year's theme explores how music can change and shape people's lives affecting minds, bodies and spirits.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Trust uses music in a variety of ways in the treatment and care of patients in Wirral:

Nerves and anxiety can often be reduced if music is played during local surgery in which the patient stays awake.

Music reminiscence is known to help patients who have dementia.

Calming music is often played to young patients to help reduce any fear or phobia, often before going to theatre.

BBC 1’s ethical current affairs show Sunday Morning Live also came from Arrowe Park Hospital later that morning.

Not only did the programme link in to Radio 2’s the healing power of music theme, but it also debated another hot topic around alcohol and the effects it is having on emergency departments such as the one at Arrowe Park.
