A WIRRAL mum who set up a support group for families of children diagnosed with a premature ageing disorder has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

Jayne Hughes, 48, from Wallasey, is in the running for Tesco Mum of the Year 2015.

The mum-of-four has worked tirelessly to get a diagnosis for daughter Amy, now 23, who was diagnosed with Cockayne Syndrome (CS), 10 years ago.

The Globe reported in 2006 that Amy’s debilitating condition was so rare doctors in the UK were unable to make a diagnosis.

Her plight touched the hearts of hundreds of our readers, who raised thousands of pounds to send her to America for specialist treatment.

Jayne set up the charity Amy and Friends, to support children and families suffering from CS. There are varying degrees of the disorder, which all lead to a shortened life expectancy.

Jayne organises group activities and support sessions, offering education and preventing isolation for those affected by CS.

Amy and Friends also hosts an annual family and medical conference, attended by specialists from around the world, and a weekly siblings event called My Time To be Me.

Jayne dedicates all of her time the charity and was recently invited to speak at a prestigious event at the House of Lords on International Rare Disease Day.

To date, she has raised £750,000, with some of that being put toward research being carried out at Newcastle University Hospital.

It is hoped this will lead to a treatment being available in the next five years.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Awards, Tesco is donating £1,000 to a charity of each shortlisted mum’s choice.

Commenting on the contribution, Jayne said: "The money will go towards research, which is still on-going and every penny counts."

Since the awards started 10 years ago, Tesco has supported the causes of more than 80 mums who have shared their personal stories of achievement, selflessness and courage.

All shortlisted mums will be considered by a judging panel, which includes DJ Sara Cox, TV personality Gabby Logan and sports presenter Denise Lewis. The winners will be announced in March next year.

Debbie Chernin, organiser of Tesco mum of the year, said: "We are extremely proud to be celebrating the 10th Anniversary year of the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards.

"Each year we find remarkable mums and discover more amazing achievements and successes.

"This year is no exception. We have read many incredible stories and it’s a privilege to celebrate such inspirational women.

"Everyone shortlisted has achieved something outstanding and shown selfless devotion to others.

"Our aim is to show every single mum just how wonderful she is."
