TRANMERE Rovers have sacked manager Rob Edwards after just five months in charge.

Edwards left Prenton Park today, Monday, after his contract was terminated by the Club.

He leaves Rovers lying at the bottom of League Two after they suffered their seventh loss of the season when they were beaten by Plymouth on Saturday.

Tranmere have won just two of their opening 12 games this season.

The search for a new manager is underway with an announcement expected to be made later this week.

Chairman Mark Palios said: "Rob is a decent man who has worked very hard over the past few months for the Football Club.

"However, with the club currently sitting at the bottom of League Two for the first time in 32 years it was decided this was the right time to make the break.

"I remain committed to the vision, that Rob shared, of playing free-flowing and skilful football.

"And while we have shown in some of our periods of play that we are not far off being able to achieve that - we have not been able to do it consistently.

"We have also not been sufficiently pragmatic when circumstances demanded that we close out a game to secure a win.

"If we are to achieve the required results in future it is clear that we need to strengthen the squad further."

Mr Palios has highlighted the need for the next manager of Tranmere Rovers to have good contacts in the game to help bolster the recruitment of new players.

"Our recruitment department, which has been depleted by years of under-investment, is being supplemented and strengthened," he added.

“But in the short term our ability to find new players to cover injuries and to supplement the existing line up will also depend on having in place a manager with an extensive network of contacts in the game.

“This will therefore be one of the key attributes that I will be looking for in a replacement for Rob."

Work is now starting on finding a new manager to take the team although Mr Palios has no intention of rushing into an appointment.

"I will make an announcement later this week regarding who will take charge of the team for the match against Oxford on Saturday," Mr Palios added.

"In the meantime, I would like to thank you, our supporters, for your loyalty and patience throughout the recent disappointing run of results.

"Your vocal support to the end away at Bury and again here on Saturday against Plymouth was magnificent, and I know it helped the players to keep fighting to the end.

"I hope that very soon we will be able to reward that loyalty and support with some more wins,

"On a personal note, I would like to wish Rob well for what comes next for him.

"I have enjoyed working with him, and am sure that he will bounce back from this setback and use the experience to develop his fledgling management career."
