A VISUALLY-impaired woman from Wallasey is set to take the plunge and dive with sharks in a bid to raise awareness and funds for Guide Dogs.

Lynette Proctor will be joined by Kerry Singleton from Warrington when she takes on the challenge at Blue Planet Aquarium today, Monday.

The dive, which takes place during the annual Guide Dogs Week, is part of Lynette and Kerry’s “Year of Fear” fundraising campaign, where they are taking on a range of fearsome charity challenges.

After undergoing full training, the guide dog users will go into the water and specialist dive instructors Julie Vasey and Verity Byers who will be on hand throughout the experience to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Until guide dog Pippa entered her life 18 months ago, 26-year-old Lynette was unable to leave the house on her own for two years.

Lynette said: “Fears can be little or large. Before we had our guide dogs Pippa and Harley, even leaving the house alone was scary. Now we face our fears on a daily basis.

“We’re nervous but excited about coming face-to-face with sharks but we want to show to everyone that losing your vision doesn’t mean your life ends.”

Kerry said: “No one should ever feel isolated the way we did. If we can inspire others who are visually impaired to live their lives to the fullest and have the independence they deserve then it will all be worth it.

“Guide Dogs helped us both so much that we want to give something back and help them raise vital funds so they can continue to provide their life changing services.”

Blue Planet Aquarium’s spectacular three-million litre Caribbean Reef display contains some real giants of the deep.

Among them are nurse sharks, lemon sharks, black and white tip reef sharks, zebra sharks, stingrays and of course, the famous sand tiger sharks.

In addition to the sharks and rays, the vast display is also home to around 1,500 fish including pufferfish, moray eels, trevally and triggerfish.
