A LORRY driver arrested after a man was killed in a 14-vehicle pile-up on the M53 has been released on bail.

The 51-year-old man died and his partner and front seat passenger was left in a serious condition with back injuries following two separate collisions on the motorway in Wirral on Tuesday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after the Citroen car he was driving was involved in the second crash with seven cars and a lorry.

The driver of the Iceland lorry – a 60-year-old man from Chester – was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

But Merseyside Police has today confirmed he has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

A second man, also involved in the second collision, is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery yesterday for a serious chest injury.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.

The other people who suffered minor injuries have all been released from hospital.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
