BAKERS and coffee lovers across the borough pulled together to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s largest annual fundraising event and raised a record £20m last year to help people affected by cancer.

Schools across Wirral took part, including The Lyndale School in Eastham.

Headteacher Kim Owen said: “We do it every year for Macmillan just to give something back because people are so generous with donations for the school.”

Friends from Eastham Day Centre and former pupils of Meadowside also took part in the school’s coffee morning, helping to raise £76 through the raffle.

Pupils at Calday Grammar School also took part in putting on their biggest coffee morning to date.

Year 7 form tutor Cat Trotter, who organised the event, said she was delighted with the turnout.

“I was worried that no one would come but almost every pupil came along and we raised £300,” she said.

Nearly all of the cakes on offer on Friday were homemade by Year 7 pupils at Calday, who all pulled together with the support of their parents and form tutors after Ms Trotter suggested they take part.

As well as traditional treats, Ms Trotter said Calday pupils had a choice of gluten free delights too.

Ms Trotter added: “We’re going to make it an annual thing because it’s nice for the Year 7’s who have just arrived – they get pushed around sometimes by the older boys but they were all cheering for them at the end.”
