NURSERY staff are calling on the community they serve to “rally together” to help put a stop to senseless vandalism that has caused the disruption of more than 40 children.

The vandals managed to climb onto the roof of Jack and Jill Day Nursery, based in Seacombe’s Children Centre, over the weekend and smashed several windows - which were 30ft from the ground - leaving rooms used by the centre’s youngsters covered in broken glass.

“There was just glass everywhere,” said director Marjorie Jack.

“The baby room, the preschool room and our resource room were just full of glass – we’ve had to empty every box and clean every single toy.

“It’s going to take us the full day but we’ve got a good team of people working very hard.”

Although rooms used by the nursery’s children are out of use until the clean-up is completed and windows are repaired, Marjorie says they are thankful that they are able to use other rooms within the children’s centre.

She added: “We are allowed to use any of the rooms in the centre so the children are going into rooms they are quite familiar with but it’s still quite distressing and disrupting because they don’t know why they are being moved.

“I have to ask the question why – what is the benefit of doing something like this in your own local area?

“The last time the rooms were affected by vandalism was about 10 years ago so we have felt quite safe – we are part of the community because the children we are looking after are the children of the community.”

Marjorie added:  “This facility is being used, possibly, by the family of the people who have done this.

“The parents in the local area won’t know what’s happened but hopefully people will find out what their children are doing.

“We hope they will rally together in support of us and stop this sort of thing from happening again.”
