THREE youths have appeared in court charged with causing £300,000 worth of a criminal damage to a historic Wirral cemetery.

Police arrested the three youths earlier this year following an investigation into the vandalism of more than 100 graves and memorials at Flaybrick Hill Cemetery, on Tollemache Road, Bidston on May 22.

Two teenagers from Birkenhead, aged 14 and 16, pleaded not guilty to damaging “a quantity of grave stones, statues and other graveyard fittings to the value of £300,000 belonging to Wirral Council” when they appeared before Wirral youth court on Thursday.

A third boy, a 10-year-old also from Birkenhead, also denied the same charges.

All three had previously pleaded not guilty to stealing urns from the same cemetery on May 22.

Chair of the bench Brian Beard said: “You have got very very serious charges hanging over you, as serious as I can remember in these courts in all the years I have been involved.”

All three youths were bailed to Wirral youth court for trial on January 20, 2015.
