THE 21st Hoylake 10k Coastal fun run takes place today.

The Globe-backed event, which raises funds for a special needs club in the town, starts outside Hoylake Community Centre in Hoyle Road at 11am.

More than 600 people braved the wind and rain for last year’s event, raising £8,500.

So far, more than 500 have signed up for today's event and there is still time to register before the race starts.

Urging our readers to sign up, race secretary Carla Williams told the Globe last week: "I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has registered.

"It is very much appreciated and shows your support for what is a very worthy and important cause, the Wednesday Special Needs Club."

Putting the runners under starters orders last year was Wirral West MP Esther McVey.

First man across the finish line was James Scott-Buccleuch, 35, from Stockport Harriers in the time of 33 minutes, 41 seconds.

First woman to finish was Sarah Roberts, 33, from Pensby Runners, her time being 42.06.

The results from today's race will be published on the special needs club's website www.wsnc.co.uk on Wednesday.
