WIRRAL Council Leader Phil Davies is using a successful campaign against dog-fouling in Hamilton Square to begin rolling out plans for the entire borough.

Several months ago waste and environmental services – helped by staff from parks and countryside – introduced several temporary signs against fouling around the historic square.

So far, the results have shown nearly a halving of the problem in the area.

Reporting on the initiative – which has been undertaken by 12 councils, including Wirral – Cllr Davies said: “This is an important breakthrough in my campaign to clean up Wirral.

“I get many complaints from residents, pensioners, as well as families, on the hazards of dog fouling in Wirral.”

Councillor Davies said he plans on “building on the success” of the Hamilton Square scheme to roll out a similar campaign across the borough as soon as funds are available.

He added: “The Birkenhead constituency committee would like to hear from residents in Birkenhead where dog fouling is prevalent.”

Wirral Council has already drawn up an action register built from residents’ complaints of those areas most seriously affected by dog fouling.

The council will also be joining with the Keep Britain Tidy campaign in October.

“As soon as we have a complete list, we’ll announce plans curb dog fouling,” said Cllr Davies.
