INDUSTRIAL action is looming at Cammell Laird shipyard as union members vote to take action in a dispute over pay.

Union officials say a ban on overtime and other action short of a strike will begin on September 11, with a 24-hour walk-out set to take place on September 22 if "meaningful talks" are not restarted.

Trade union GMB says 560 workers at the Birkenhead yard have voted overwhelmingly for industrial action, and other steps short of a strike.

The ballot result has been conveyed to the company. A spokesman told the Globe they do not wish to comment .

Albie McGuigan, GMB regional officer, said: “For the last few months GMB has been trying to improve pay and some additional terms and conditions for our members at Cammell Laird shipyard. All attempts have failed and the company’s offer is far short of our aspirations.

“The members have now voted decisively for industrial action and I have conveyed this information to the company.

“I will be formally notifying the company shortly than an overtime ban, and maximum safety and flexibility restrictions will begin on Thursday, September 11.

“If that does not restart meaningful dialogue we will have a 24-hour strike on September 22.”

In July of this year chief executiveJohn Syvret has acknowledged the “world class” quality of his workforce following completion of the first year of a contract with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Three major refits have been completed at Laird in the last 12 months as part of a “cluster” contract with the RFA. The work was valued at £41m and provided jobs for 200 people.

The company is well underway with its biggest refit to date for the RFA – the overhaul of Fort Victoria in Birkenhead.
