WIRRAL parents are being encouraged to sign their children up for free school meals – even if they are due to receive them anyway under changes to Government rules.

From this September every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at primary school will receive a free school meal.

However, schools still need to make sure pupils who are eligible to receive free school meals are signed up to do so, otherwise they risk losing funding.

Children older than Year 2 also need to be registered to ensure they get their free school meal.

Schools receive a "Pupil Premium" for each eligible child whose parent or guardian signs up for free school meals. This funding is used for things like IT equipment, books and building improvements.

Councillor Tony Smith, cabinet member for family services, said: “It is absolutely crucial that schools get the maximum possible funding they can, and a key part of this is making sure that every child who is eligible to receive free school meals is signed up.”
