A Wirral community centre which opened in the wake of the First World War is to host an open day to encourage new members to join its sports clubs.

Upton Victory Hall was founded in 1919 by local residents including returning soldiers, who also created the town’s war memorial, which now stands outside Upton Library.

On  Sunday, September 7, from 11am to 4pm, Upton Victory Hall will host an open day, with demonstrations of club sports including tennis, bowls, badminton, karate and croquet. Entry is free and open to all.

Members of the club will be dressing in Edwardian clothing to demonstrate the sports, and visitors will be able to borrow equipment to take part.

Lauretta Radcliffe, chair of Upton Victory Hall’s executive committee, said: “We want the day to be as fun and welcoming as possible. We’re very proud of the hall’s history, and in particular of its links to returning heroes from the First World War. Victory Hall was founded in remembrance of the fallen, and so this year’s centenary is very important to us.

“We are really keen for new members to sign up for our sports clubs, and particularly young people.”

The day will also see face painting and games for the younger children. There will be a barbeque, afternoon tea and a bar.

Music will be provided by a ukulele band, in keeping with the theme of the inter-war period when the hall was opened. The Upton Historical Society, Bridge club and Red Cross will host stands.
