Time to ease smoke ban on pubs says Wirral MEP as new figures show 31 are closing every week

NEW figures showing pub closures have accelerated to 31 per week have led to calls to reduce taxes and ease the smoking ban on the local boozer.

The figures are released as part of real ale group Camra's "Pubs Matter"campaign and show 3% of pubs in the suburbs have shut in the past six months.

Paul Nuttall, UKIP’s deputy leader and Northwest MEP, said “It is completely unfair that pubs are paying nearly ten times more tax on a price of a pint in comparison to supermarkets.

"The smoking ban also severely hit pubs right across the country - if landlords want a well-ventilated room set aside for smokers they should be able to make that choice.

"This move along with reducing VAT for the hospitality industry would support local pubs and decelerate the rate they’re closing each and every week”.

He added: “Cheap deals in big superstores ultimately leads to more people drinking large quantities before they go out, leading to even greater losses for pub landlords.

“A host of countries across Europe have lower levels of VAT in order to protect hospitality businesses. The end result is more bars are staying open and employing more people”.

Camra said pubs support more than a million jobs and each contributes an average of £80,000 to its local economy each year.

The smoking ban in England - making it illegal to smoke in all enclosed work places - came into force in July 2007 under the Health Act.

A review of evidence on the impact in England in 2012 was commissioned by the Government and carried out by Professor Linda Bauld from the University of Stirling and the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies.

Professor Bauld's report concluded: "The law has had a significant impact.

"Results show benefits for health, changes in attitudes and behaviour - and no clear adverse impact on the hospitality industry."

One of the few places where it is still NOT illegal to light up is inside the Palace of Westminster, but in the "spirit of the law" MPs and Lords have restricted smoking to just four areas in the grounds.

What a twit that's why so many pubs close!!

Give landlords the choice to be a smoking pub or a non smoking pub then people can make the choice. Provided non smokers are prevented from going into smokers pubs!!!

If only the answer was that simple. The Pub market has changed its dynamics over the last 10 years, closures are down to a combination of drinkers drinking at home, over avaricious Pub Company's that tie tenants in to stupid (but legal contracts) and deals that make selling and relying on the meagre profits Beer delivers unsustainable. Those outlets that have survived have moved in to the much more profitable food market too, sadly the local as we know it has pretty much gone. Its certainly not in the main due to the loss of smoking for the outside of pubs these days are littered with drinkers coming out for their nicotine fix...

In some instances I agree the loss of these charismatic buildings as pubs is a shame BUT I'd rather see them being converted to an alternative use than sit there waiting to be vandalised and become an eyesore..

What this report doesn't seem to pick up is the new (Alcohol serving) premises that are springing up look at Marine Point for example. 4 years ago I think there were 2 pubs down there and no real eateries (now and relatively new)there is the Hungry Horse, Marino Café, a Mexican restaurant, Prezzo, La Tasca, The Casino restaurant and on the other side of the road Wetherspoons, & Portofino. Sad as pub closures are this doesn't sound like too much of a doom and gloom industry story to me.

Heres a time line starting in 1900,dont be surprised to see the same thing playing out today nearly 100 years later.

1901: REGULATION: Strong anti-cigarette activity in 43 of the 45 states. "Only Wyoming and Louisiana had paid no attention to the cigarette controversy, while the other forty-three states either already had anti-cigarette laws on the books or were considering new or tougher anti-cigarette laws, or were the scenes of heavy anti- cigarette activity" (Dillow, 1981:10).

1904: New York: A judge sends a woman is sent to jail for 30 days for smoking in front of her children.

1904: New York City. A woman is arrested for smoking a cigarette in an automobile. "You can't do that on Fifth Avenue," the arresting officer says.

1907: Business owners are refusing to hire smokers. On August 8, the New York Times writes: "Business ... is doing what all the anti-cigarette specialists could not do."

1917: SMOKEFREE: Tobacco control laws have fallen, including smoking bans in numerous cities, and the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Idaho and Tennessee.

1937: hitler institutes laws against smoking. This one you can google.

Lets summarize; A group that is part of the lobby against people who smoke was paid with tax dollars to **** it's own dirty work? The results where as expected. The only part not expected was that the people who hired them were not brought up on charges or fired for gross incompetence. Oh but of course politicians have a right to be dim and lacking of logic. Otherwise they would be doing real work in the real world that demands an honest effort.

You don't need to be a medical expert to see that smoking is bad for you, you just have to look at the sad, yellow faced, prematurely aged folks hanging around ouside the pubs of Birkenhead with a fag hanging from their gobs. I mean, they look so healthy, don't they?

It should be remembered that the majority of people (around 80%) do not smoke and are hardly likely to be attracted to any pub that allows smoking which used to cause obnoxious, unpleasant to breathe air and smelly clothes.
Separate smoking rooms would not remove the problem unless these had a separate entrance from the outside since smoke would drift from opened doors unless massive extraction fans were used.
Smoking bans are for the safety of staff as well as customers and somebody would have to serve the smoking room, remove empty glasses and clean the room.
It would also cause social arguments with mixed parties of smokers and none smokers. Which part of the pub would they use? Would none smokers be pressurised into using the obnoxious smoking room or would the smokers agree to abstain from their habit? If the latter then what is gained by removing the ban, which plays part in encouraging the addicts to quit?
Pub closures are NOT caused by the smoking ban but by cheap supermarket booze and the availability of more stay at home activities such as TV, DVD, home computers etc. - the same reasons that have caused the closure of cinemas (or are the addicts going to claim that this is also caused by the smoking ban?)

I am a member of UKIP but Paul Nuttall does not always get it right and should make it clear that some of his comments are just his personal opinion and not party policy.
