THOUSANDS of motor enthusiasts are expected to turn out for the Birkenhead Festival of Transport, which starts today.

The event, organised by Birkenhead Lions, ends on Sunday.

Organisers are looking forward to what promises to be a fantastic display with a full-sized replica of a Spitfire among the exhibits.

Other attractions include military vehicles, a steam-powered boat on the lake, vintage fairground rides and classic cars.

There will also be a re-enactment of the Cheshire Regiment's First World War Field Hospital.

Ken Fretwell, chairman of the organising committee, said: "Our sixth anniversary show went well despite what the weather threw at us.

"On behalf of myself and the committee and the volunteers who put on the show through some very trying times, would like to thank everyone for turning out in such great numbers to enjoy and support our show despite the weatherman's dire warnings which thankfully did not happen.

"Up until last year, funding came from the council, but this has now stopped. Fortunately we made enough from last year's event to ensure this year's event can go ahead.

"We hope as many people as possible can come along to enjoy the show."
