A WIRRAL pensioner died just days after being struck by a "quadricycle" as he walked along New Brighton promenade.

The 65-year-old man – who was hit by the four-wheeled pedal-powered vehicle on July 22 – died on Monday, although police say it is “too early to speculate” on the cause of death.

The pensioner, his wife and two boxer dogs, had been walking along the pedestrian promenade between Bubbles play centre and the Home and Bargain store at around 4.15pm last Tuesday when a blue quadricycle with four teenagers onboard came up behind them.

The youths – who were riding and acting anti-socially towards other people on the promenade – struck the pensioner with the vehicle, knocking him to the floor.

After stopping momentarily, the group of teenagers got back onto the quadricyle and left the scene in the direction of Fort Perch Rock.

The man - who had serious underlying medical issues - became poorly and was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries that included swelling, bruising and head trauma.

He was discharged from hospital on the same day and went home but later returned to hospital on Thursday, July 24 after his condition deteriorated. He died in the early hours of Monday morning.

Merseyside Police has released a CCTV image of four youths in a quadricycle* that officers would like to speak to in connection with an incident in New Brighton on Tuesday, 22 July.

The man’s death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem is being carried out to determine the cause of his death.

Investigations are underway into the full circumstances of both the incident on the promenade in New Brighton and the man’s subsequent death.

Police are keen to identify and trace the four people on board the quadricycle to establish their account of what happened and have released CCTV in an attempt to find them.

Detective Inspector John Griffith from Wirral CID said: "We are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry to establish who these young men are as we believe they may have information that could assist our investigation.

"I would urge them to come forward and make themselves known to us so that we can go and speak to them and get their version of events. A number of passers-by went to this man's aid after he had been knocked over and I would also encourage those people to also contact the police as they may have information important to this case.

"At this stage it is too early to draw conclusions about the cause of the man’s death and it is unhelpful to speculate. We are treating it as an unexplained death until the results of a post mortem examination are known”

  • Anyone with information should call Wirral CID on 0151 777 2265 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Cycled away after leaving a pensioner on the ground with head injuries. Shocking to have cycled so close to people as to frighten them (implicit in the fact that a man was knocked over). Shocking that this man was knocked over. Shocking to have left him on the ground. Shocking not to have rung and waited for an ambulance. Shocking to now hide away in cowardly fashion. Shocking to have contributed to a death. Shocking that this anti-social behaviour is tolerated. Shocking that 'thought for others' is not instilled in all people from cradle to grave.

I've never seen one of these before on/in Wirral so can but assume it is owned not hired? Surely it is not beyond the wit of man to discover where this extremely conspicuous 'vehicle' is? Please do everything in your power to highlight this case, whilst they may or may not be directly or indirectly responsible for this gentleman's death they are for sure responsible for striking him an assault in itself.

Parents if these are your children please, please, do the right thing and contact the Police.

Quad cycles can be hired from close by the Marine Lake. It seems that some vetting as to who is hiring/using these vehicles is required.

Society is to blame. When so-called comedians such as Ricky Gervais can earn a successful living by ridiculing vulnerable people, no wonder the younger generation have little respect either.

As a regular cyclist commuter along the prom, I've often seen these rental bikes being used anti-socially - with families often letting young children use them alone.

No one could have predicted that this would happen, but I hope some consideration will now be given as to whether they are a good idea.

Surely the hiring agency must have some details for insurance purposes? Presuming the agency considered liability insurance??

considering the dangerous manner in which i've seen these bikes being ridden along the often crowded prom, frankly i'm surprised it's taken this long for someone to be injured.
