DETECTIVES investigating the assault of a teenager in Birkenhead have released CCTV of man wanted in connection with the incident.

Police were called to Woodchurch Road on Monday May 26, following reports that a man had approached the boy and his brother earlier in the day.

He followed both boys into a Subway shop and put his hands round the 14-year-old’s neck before leaving the premises.

Police have spoken to witnesses and CCTV from the area has been located and reviewed.

An investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing.

Detective Inspector Paul Parry from Wirral CID, said: "This was a nasty assault which left bruising round the neck of a young boy.

"There can be no excuse for this type of behaviour and I would like to reassure people in Birkenhead that we are doing everything we can to bring the person responsible to justice.

"As part of our enquiries, we have issued CCTV stills of a man we believe may have vital information which could assist with our investigation.

"I would appeal to the man, or anyone who recognises him, to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
