Shots were fired during a targeted attack in Birkenhead on Tuesday morning.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident in Argyle Street South.

Officers were called to the scene at around 10.30am and found and the victim, who is in his 20s, with injuries to his head.

Following a search of the area, a number of shell casings were recovered.

However, police say his injuries are "not consistent with a firearms discharge."

The area was cordoned off for examination and a search is underway. CCTV is being sought from the area and house-to-house inquiries are ongoing.

The incident is being treated as a "targeted attack" against the man.

Highly-visibility uniformed patrols have been increased in the area to provide a reassuring presence for residents.

Officers are appealing for members of the public who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the incident to get in touch.
