THERE is just a week to go until this year's Wirral Race For Life.

The Globe-backed fundraiser, taking place in Birkenhead Park on Sunday, July 27, raises much-needed funds to help the life-saving work of Cancer Research UK.

So far, 2,642 women have signed up. Organisers hope 3,600 women will take part, helping raise £350,000.

The Globe has been Race For Life’s official newspaper since 2006. Entry closes at midnight on Friday, July 25.

Jennifer Ward, northwest event manager for Cancer Research UK, said: "It's getting really close to the big day once again, can't believe how quickly time has gone since last year's event.

"I want to say a big thanks to everyone who has signed up to take part in this year’s event. It means a lot to us and will help to fund the vital research.

"If you haven't signed up yet, now's the time to do so. We still have a lot of places left to fill, so we are urging women to sign up as soon as possible.

"By raising money through Race for Life, people in the North West are helping Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists make advances in research which will help more men, women and children survive."

Among those taking part in this year's event is Debbie Layfield, who works for Tesco in Bidston Moss.

The store's community champion, Debbie has been clear of cancer for five years and has organised a big group featuring colleagues to take part part in the run.

Also taking part is Joanne McCann, whose dad William died from pancreatic cancer. She said: "It's going to be an incredibly emotional event, but I know dad would be proud of me and that by taking part I’ll be helping other families have more precious time with their loved ones.

"That's why I want women in the area to join me, because united we are stronger than this terrible disease."
