Wirral mum blasts Liverpool after club refuses to refund Suarez shirts

Wirral Globe: Luis Suarez. Luis Suarez.

A WIRRAL mum has hit out after she was refused a refund on an £84 Liverpool shirt with Luis Suarez’s name printed on the back.

Maxine Lucas had visited the Liverpool store in Birkenhead to buy a football shirt for her seven-year-old son the week the 2014/15 kit was released.

But she told the Globe she is “disgusted” that she is not entitled to a refund even though the Uruguayan striker is expected to sign for Barcelona for £75m before the new season begins.

She said: “I think it’s disgusting that after paying out £84 for the new season’s football kit with Suarez on the back for my seven-year-old son, and then to hear he is leaving before the season is even started, the Liverpool shop in Birkenhead is basically telling me it’s tough.

“They are not prepared to take any kits back with Suarez on the back.

“All them poor kids who are excited to wear their new kits to support their club next season may as well put them in the bin.

“It makes me so angry that a club of this size and with the money they make can allow this to happen.”

But Maxine is not the only parent finding herself in this situation, with many fans unhappy to hear that Liverpool will not be offering automatic refunds if Suarez leaves before the season starts in August.

A disclaimer on the club’s website states that customised and personalised items – including shirts – cannot be exchanged or refunded.

It says: “LFC holds no responsibility for subsequent changes to squad numbers or if a player is transferred.”

LFC shirts can still be ordered online with Suarez printed on the back.

I'd be asking myself why have I just paid £84 for a football shirt that will last a season let alone one with Suarez on?!?

An 8 year old tells his parents what he wants, sound to me he runs the house then. Really think some of the money should be invested and teach 8 year olds to save some money instead of blowing it all in one go. Did he get brand new Footie boots to go with the kit as well?

I don't think the Mother said that all of his money was spent on the kit. I'm assuming the child was given more than £84, and the majority of it was saved but the child wanted to spend a portion of it on his favourite teams kit.

It's good that parents are teaching children the value of money by making them buy their own things. If parents just go out and buy the children whatever they want then they will become spoilt.

I'd love to see birthdays in your house. "Happy birthday son, here's some money, but you can't spend any of it, I'm going to invest it into an account that you can access when you are 18. Sorry we didn't get you anything you can use, but you need to learn how to save".

I wouldnt say he rules the house because i let him choose a birthday gift of his own choice with his own money..birthdays in our house are celebrated with love and nice presents yes but my children also understand the value of money..they all have savings for a rainy day and they certainly do not get handed things on a plate..and no..he did not get new football boots too. ..but if he wanted boots, and his money stretched that far, then boots he would have had :)

Liverpool FC should offer a refund as per Everton. Mega £'s are made out of would-be footballers purchasing football outfits. - they are at the top of the 'wish list' when you are 8 years old. In fact Liverpool should have withdrawn the shirts as soon as there was a whiff of Suarez's departure.

Perhaps she should have paid more attention to the rumours of Suarez's departure, but the main responsibility must lie with the club here; they've known this was on the cards for a while, he nearly left a year ago and the rumours have been rife. They shouldn't have even been on sale.

Kids shirts don't cost £84, and the club sell the shirt blank and you purchase the name yourself. It's your choice not the clubs, my kids get tops but I don't get names on them for this exact reason.

Ok my son is 7 years old as said in article..and I did not pay £84 for a shirt..I paid £84 for the full kit, also as said in article... So firstly, Ok maybe its my own fault for allowing my 7year old son to spend his own money on a kit with his fave players name on it, but you show me a kid who doesnt want a name on their shirt. Secondly, although the club say its my own responsibility, maybe they should get their staff to point this out at time of purchase because not once was I told that names are put on at your own risk and if the player leaves then I would be stuck with it..Lesson learnt yes..but I still dont agree with the policy.
