Traffic and Travel Plan:

Getting on course:

On foot; If you live within walking distance of the course, use the designated pedestrian walkways to enter at the club’s Pinfold Lane, Meols Drive and Stanley Road entrances.

There is no access for spectators via the main entrance to Royal Liverpool Golf Club on Meols Drive.

By Merseyrail: This is a preferred means for visitors to arrive at the Championship. Merseyrail provides a convenient and easy way to travel to the event with Hoylake Station a five minute walk from the entrance to the course.

The journey time is 29 minutes from Liverpool and trains will run from 5.30am until 11:30pm on Championship days (Thursday, July 17, to  Sunday, July 20).

Some trains will also have an increased number of carriages to meet demand.

The normal 15 minute train service between Liverpool Lime Street and Hoylake will be increased to a 10 minute service during peak morning and afternoon sessions.

Passengers travelling via Lime Street Station in Liverpool should change onto the Merseyrail Wirral Line service for trains to Hoylake.

Passengers travelling on the Merseyrail network from Chester or Ellesmere Port should change at Hamilton Square.

Passengers travelling on Merseyrail from New Brighton should change at Birkenhead North.

Passengers travelling on the Merseyrail network from Northern Line services running from Southport, Ormskirk, Kirkby and Hunts Cross, can change to the Wirral Line at Liverpool Central or Liverpool Moorfields.

Once at Hoylake station, wheelchair users will be able to use a designated wheelchair friendly shuttle service to and from the course.

Bus: Local bus services in the Hoylake and West Kirby area will run as usual during the event.

Bicycle: A bicycle park is located in reserved car park Orange C at the course, which cyclists can find by following road signage in the area. Cycles are carried free on Merseyrail services; however cyclists should be aware that thousands of people are expected to be travelling to the championship by train, making trains exceptionally busy.

Bicycles are not permitted into the Championship.

Log onto www.visitwirral.com/attractions-and-activities/cycling-guides for a map of Wirral’s cycle routes.

Rail services between Hoylake and West Kirby will be suspended from Thursday, July 10, to Tuesday,  July 22, to allow for construction of a level crossing from Morpeth Road to the practice ground and safe access for players and spectators to the Championship’s Practice Ground on Hoylake Municipal Golf Course.

Replacement buses will operate, replicating the suspended rail service until it re-opens for normal service on Wednesday, July 23.

Please Note: Bikes cannot be taken on rail replacement bus services.

More information on public transport in Merseyside is available by logging on to www.merseytravel.gov.uk or calling Traveline on 0871 200 2233.

By taxi: Private hire taxis will use Valentia Road as a drop off and pick up point. These taxis must be booked in advance – you will not be able to stop a private hire taxi in the street.

Black cabs will be available from The Quadrant, Market Street for pick up near the course. Anyone can go to this stand and pick up a taxi without booking.

Travelling by road/car: Police are urging all motorists to use the designated traffic routes, which will be clearly signed by the AA. Visitors and spectators are advised to turn off their satellite navigation systems and follow the appropriate signage.

Motorists will be directed to Park and Ride schemes. There are no public car parks adjacent to the course and those arriving by car must use these schemes.

The R&A has organised two official public park and ride sites. These are: Heron Road car park Traffic will be directed to this park and ride site via the M53 Junction 2, Moreton Spur, Upton Bypass, Saughall Massie Road, and Saughall Massie Bypass.

A bus service will then shuttle spectators to Royal Liverpool Golf Course heading via Birkenhead Road and Market Street to a drop off point by the course on Stanley Road.

Parking for the disabled pre-paid ticket holders who require access to the Disabled Parking Area, are asked to call The R&A Ticket Office (01334 460 000) in advance and they will be sent a disabled car park pass.

Health and Social Care update: Arrangements have been made to ensure access at all times for any urgent or unplanned visits including GP home visits.

Steps are being taken to minimise disruption to health services including re-arranging deliveries during busy traffic times and rescheduling some home visits.

If you use Wirral Council services for your social care needs, it will be very much ‘business as usual’. If you do experience any problems during The Open Championship, you should either call:

 Central Advice and Duty Team on 0151 606 2006 (office hours)

 Emergency Duty Team on 0151 677 6557 (out of hours).

Similarly, people who use social care services such as home care or meals on wheels, or who need transporting to day centres, will continue to have their services provided in the usual way.

Key elements of the traffic plan include:

 The Kings Gap - One-way only for traffic from the roundabout at Meols Drive to Stanley Road.

 Stanley Rd - One-way only for traffic for part of its length (between The Kings Gap and Beach Road)

 On Stanley Road from the Kings Gap for its full length, and from Market Street to North Parade, parking will be prohibited by the placement of No Waiting At Any Time traffic cones.

These restrictions will be in place from noon this Saturday to Tuesday,  July 22 and have been agreed in consultation with Merseyside Police and the emergency services.

 Access into the Stanley Road area will be restricted during the Championship from noon this Saturday to to July 22, with the exception of residents’ vehicles displaying an appropriate permit and other authorised vehicles associated with servicing the event.

 The frontage to Hoylake railway station will be completely closed to traffic, with no access permissible, between the alleyway to the rear of the Quadrant and Station Road.

 Albert Road will be closed south-east of its junction with Charles Road but with permissible access retained for residents and businesses of Albert Road, Grosvenor Road and the frontage to Hoylake Station.

 Stopping will be strictly prohibited on both sides of Albert Road by the placement of No Waiting At Any Time traffic cones (limited waiting parking will of course continue to be permissible in all marked parking bays).

 Stopping will be strictly prohibited on both sides of Meols Drive by the placement of No Waiting At Any Time  traffic cones A permit system is in place for residents in roads affected by the temporary traffic management restrictions and who have vehicles registered to their addresses.

Up to two visitor permits will be available per household, on request.

If you have any queries relating to the temporary traffic arrangements, including permits, for the Open please call 0151 691 8650 and ask for Helen Gallagher.

Taxis will be allowed to enter the Stanley Road area to pick up or drop off at private properties but will not however, be allowed into the Stanley Road area to drop off or pick up spectators.

Access will also be provided for trades, however, they will not be able to park on the road in most areas. In the case of corporate hospitality there are no special arrangements for access.

 Coach arrivals and parking will be directed to the north side of North Parade / Meols Parade and managed by a specialist parking contractor employed by The R&A.

 Valentia Road has been identified as a specific site for taxis to drop off / pick up near to the course.

 Temporary cycle stands will be set up on the Hoylake municipal course at its boundary with the train station car park.

 Meols Drive will remain open to traffic. A series of temporary footbridges are proposed to take spectators to and from the course over Meols Drive.

 Certain residential roads in the immediate area will clearly be signed as ‘access only for residents’.

 A strict tow-away policy will be enforced by the police in designated ‘no parking’ areas.

Whilst it is appreciated that there may be inconvenience caused as a result of the above arrangements, they are necessary to assist residents and businesses, to ensure safety and maintain access at all times.

Meols Drive will remain open.

Household Waste Collections: Residents in areas next to the course and associated zones affected by the Championship will have their bin collection rescheduled to Saturday, July 12.

Residents affected in this way will be directly notified of this change.

The remaining collections in the West Kirby and Hoylake area will take place on the normal day, although the council’s waste contractor Biffa will be visiting as early in the day as possible.

All residents are advised to present their bins no later than 7am to avoid missing the collection.

No collections will be cancelled.

Residents are also asked to make every effort to bring their empty bins back on to their property as soon as they are able.

Residents should be aware that bins left on the highway and causing an obstruction, either post collection or presented on the wrong day, are at risk of being removed by the council.
