Developer behind £50m Hoylake golf resort to remain unknown until August

Wirral Globe: Land at Hoylake which could be used to turn the town into a five-star resort. Land at Hoylake which could be used to turn the town into a five-star resort.

WIRRAL Council has lost the opportunity to use next month’s Open Golf Championship to identify the preferred developers behind the proposed luxury golf resort scheme close to the renowned Royal Liverpool links.

Council bosses had hoped to make the announcement to a captive audience of world-wide media men and women reporting on the battle for the Claret Jug at Hoylake.

But leader Cllr Phil Davies said today that a preferred developer had been chosen but “Because some details are still  being worked” it would be late August or early September before  an announcement could be made.

He disclosed that the developer was “Internationally renowned”  and that people would be impressed when the announcement was made.

Despite the economic downturn of recent years no less than 20 developers and investors  expressed interest in joining forces with Wirral Council to develop a 285-acre site in Hoylake featuring a “signature” golf course, five star hotel and conference facilities.

The local authority vision is to create facilities that would become a tourist destination - both for golfers and families  - with a series of other leisure facilities such as water sports and pony trekking.

The aim is to construct an American-style golf course where water will be a big feature – in total contrast to the Royal Liverpool links and parkland courses found across the UK.

Developers will be tasked with creating a world-class facility to rival those at the K Club in Ireland, Celtic Manor in Wales and Gleneagles in Scotland where the Ryder Cup will be contested later in the year.

Royal Liverpool attendance figures for 2006 (230,000) have only been bettered by the 250,000 at the 2000 Open at St Andrews – the home of golf.

The R&A have made two concessions for next year’s tournament.  Golf enthusiasts will get special passes to leave the course and return later; and mobile phones will be allowed on the links  following a trial run at Royal Lytham last year.

Oh you are a tease Cllr Davies. Do you want us to have a summer competition to guess the name of the developer?

Perhaps WBC could provide a claret earthenware mug with an appropriate logo as a prize.

If this comes off then must be a good news story as it will create jobs and bring added prestige to the area.

However, there has been talk about this for 10 years, so it's not something that Phil Davies has driven through.

All in all though, if it happens then a big well done to those working hard to make it happen.

Typical wirral spin, there has to be lots of water features, as it will be built on a flood plain, also forgets to mention that it includes housing in the green belt. May be a good thing but all the facts should be made available to the public for an informed debate.

This ever wonderful Counil have again span the magic wheel of what THEY want as most of them like a game of golf or two.

Do any of us really want another golf course ?? Do they ever bother to ask the people of Wirral what they really want? Do they care ???

I personally think that Wirral has such a wide range and fine blend of countryside, country parks, towns, golf courses and facilities that should attract visitors and all that is required is more effort into keeping what we have in good condition and appealing.

Wirral is the most ideal urban development for attracting visitors and more residents and should put more effort into making Wirral an even more attractive place to visit. This should include converting Birkenhead docks into a Marina and building apartments on the site of the Ferry Terminal for Belfast. ( Who would agree to put that directly opposite the best view of Liverpool) Liverpool is becoming a thriving city and this council should be trying to attract more city workers that want to live on the Wirral with its direct transport services.

This council as always want to get their name in lights with Big Developments and Big announcements to try to compete with Liverpool needless to say they fail at so many and blow so much hot air that we are all rather board of all the spin.

We would hope that the council would actually look at the overall plan for Wirral which should include.

Complete redevelopment of Birkenhead town centre.
Docks to be developed as marina with apartments.
Enhancement of existing parks including Bidston Moss.
Dedicated Bike routes between towns and parks.
Improved and enhanced routes into Birkenhead.
Improvements and developments in Seacombe and Poulton.

I am sure that there are many other improvements that would bring benefits to all the people of Wirral not just another golf course blag that this is what the Councillors want as they have played on the existing 15-20 golf courses and what another! This is the land they want to use and they may have a developer that may want to build it but they cannot say who it is but we want to sound good when the Open is played!

Our council is ran by dreamers who do not have any real dreams they are just clutching at straws and praying that one day a massive developer will come in an spend a few Billion that will make them look good. They do not care about the people of Wirral or what the People of Wirral want.

They have wasted Millions of our Council tax with failed mismanagement and are cutting public services left right and centre whilst none of them have a clue or plan of what to do!!!

It does seem hell of an own goal to not have an all signing all dancing presentation and exhibition on at The Open to advertise this to the world... Yet another case of Wirral MBC 'Falling to plan and thereby planning to fail'
