A WIRRAL school will remain partially closed for a second day after serious flooding.

St George’s Primary School, in Wallasey, was closed for children in years one to four today, Wednesday, after heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon.

It will remain closed again on Thursday while remedial work is carried out to fix damage caused by the flooding.

Children in F1 and F2 and those in year five and six should attend the school as normal.

One classroom on the first floor and a large area of the ground floor at the lower site – including the main reception, year two library and conservatory – were seriously flooded.

Staff toilets are unavailable as a result and the school says there are not enough for the children.

Professional cleaners and contractors worked overnight on Tuesday to improve the state of the building, with staff hoping it will reopen fully on Friday.

A statement on the school's website said: “Schools can only operate when it is safe for the children and staff.  The headteacher and Chair of Governors have decided that due to lack of toilets, no safe way to enter the school via the front office and unhygienic conditions the lower site building needs to be closed for a short time.

“F1, F2, Y5 & Y6 are still open as usual.  The other classes can return when it is safe for them to do so.

The statement continued: "The school will update the website and send text messages to share updates as the day progresses.

"We thank our parents, carers and children for being so understanding and supportive at this time."

Arrowe Park Hopsital's accident and emergency department and All Day Health Centre were also closed on Tuesday following flash flooding.

Patients were taken to neighbouring A&E departments by ambulance following the closure at around 5.30pm

Both centres were reopened shortly after 7pm.

A spokesman for Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: "The Emergency Department at Wirral’s Arrowe Park Hospital is fully operational after flash flooding yesterday afternoon resulted in its temporary closure.

"Wirral University Teaching Hospital would like to thank the public for their understanding after thunderstorms and torrential downpours resulted in an ingress of water into the department and adjoining All Day Health Centre.

"Thanks to the prompt reaction of hospital staff, the care of patients already in the department was not affected and there was minimal disruption.

"The Trust would also like to thank the North West Ambulance Service, neighbouring A&E departments, its staff at Arrowe Park Hospital and the local and regional media for their prompt positive action during this time."
