A WIRRAL school has warned parents that they will have to find alternative arrangements for their children after serious flooding forced it to close.

St George's Primary School, in Wallasey, will be closed for children in years one to four tomorrow, Wednesday after heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon.

Children in F1 and F2 and those in year five and six should attend the school as normal.

One classroom on the first floor and a large area of the ground floor at the lower site, including the main reception and year two library and conservatory, have been seriously flooded.

There are no staff toilets available and not enough toilets for the children.

Professional cleaners and contractors are working at the school to improve the state of the building.

A statement on the school's website said: “Schools can only operate when it is safe for the children and staff.  The headteacher and Chair of Governors have decided that due to lack of toilets, no safe way to enter the school via the front office and unhygienic conditions the lower site building needs to be closed for a short time.

“F1, F2, Y5 & Y6 are still open as usual.  The other classes can return when it is safe for them to do so.

“An assessment of the school and conditions will be made on Wednesday, June 11 after 1pm.  The website will be updated with details.  Also, school can use the text message service to contact parents although only limited information can be sent using a text.”

The statement continued: "The school will update the website and send text messages to share updates as the day progresses.

"We thank our parents, carers and children for being so understanding and supportive at this time."

Arrowe Park Hopsital's accident and emergency department and All Day Health Centre were also closed following flash flooding on Tuesday.

Patients were taken to neighbouring A&E departments by ambulance following the closure at around 5.30pm.

Both centres were reopened shortly after 7pm.
