The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Gary Millar, will mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings by laying a wreath at the Normandy Veterans Memorial Stone in St John's gardens tomorrow.

Along with the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside, Dame Lorna Muirhead, Mayor Millar will be joined by key civic and military representatives and two D-Day veterans at a short, private service to mark the anniversary.

Mayor Millar said: "The 70th anniversary of D-Day is a time for quiet reflection and also to show our thanks to those who gave their lives for us during the Second World War, and all veterans and their families since.

"I have been fortunate enough to meet many veterans from World War Two and their families during my time as Lord Mayor and their strength and dignity is an inspiration.

"Our service personnel are today, as they have always been, selflessly dedicated and committed to their roles in defending our shores and those abroad and on behalf of the City of Liverpool I am proud to remember and honour them."

This will be followed by the Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside and Lord Mayor, along with military and Royal British Legion personnel, finishing off the planting of two large poppy-shaped flower beds in St John's gardens.

The flower beds have been produced in partnership with Merseyside Royal British Legion by Liverpool City Council as part of the WW1 Centenary Commemorations.
