THERE is just over a week to go until this year's charity Wirral Bikeathon.

Proceeds from the event, taking place on Sunday, June 15, will help fund research into leukaemia and lymphoma.

Last year, 1,514 people got on their bikes for the Globe-backed event in Arrowe Country Park, helping to raise £66,000.

The event was first held in 1999 and has gone on to raise £680,000 for the charity.

It is organised entirely by a small group of local volunteers with help on the day from around 100 marshalls and supporters.

WALLASEY

A RELIGIOUS icon venerated throughout the Orthodox world for its holiness and healing powers will be displayed at a Wirral church on Friday.

When the Kursk Root Icon – a 13th century image of the Virgin May – last came to St Elisabeth's Russian Orthodox Church in Wallasey, it attracted hundreds of people from across the north west to a special veneration service.

The icon has survived wars, fires and revolutions, finally leaving Russia with the defeat of the White Armies in 1922, after the civil war that followed the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.

It is now kept in New York, but visits parishes of the Russian Church abroad from time to time.
