A NEW vintage store is proving popular with customers after it opened its doors in Birkenhead.

The charity shop with a difference, opened by Age UK Wirral, stocks everything from 50s and 60s style dresses, faux fur coats, hats, scarves and beautiful “up-cycled” furniture

While polka dot and chequered retro dresses line one wall, the opposite is filled with beautiful ornaments that would not look out of place in an Audrey Hepburn movie.

Elegant jewellery, eye-catching pieces of furniture, picnic style baskets and record players add the finishing touches to the offerings of the Argyle Street and Grange Road East corner shop.

Lynne Hamilton, fundraising manager for Age UK Wirral, said since the store opened its doors at noon on Friday, they had not stopped, with most of their initial stock flying out of the door straight away.

But with the aroma of homemade scones and freshly brewed tea, it comes as no surprise that the retail unit attracted dozens of people in its first hours.

The facility has been set up to capitalise on some of the fantastic donations the charity receives that would ordinary be no use to anyone.

“The purpose of the shop is to up-cycle old furniture that has been donated to us that would not necessarily be able to resale somewhere in one of our other shops,” explained Age UK Wirral’s retail manager, Jackie Hannigan.

“So we up-cycle them, revamp them and paint them with Annie Sloan paints.”

Any vintage items or old furniture you think could be “up-cycled” and resold by the charity can be dropped off a the Vintage Shop on Argyle Street, or can be collected by the charity.

On the shop’s opening-day success, Jackie added: “We have done really well today and we have taken lots of orders.

“If you see something you like and you want it in another colour, we can do that for you too.”

The store can be found on the corner of Argyle Street and Grange Road East and is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
