A WIRRAL hotelier was among the latest stars of hit Channel 4 series Four In A Bed.

Alan Johnson, owner of Dunsandles Guest House in New Brighton, opened the doors for filming in February. He was joined by best mate Dave Owen.

In the show, the owners of guest houses were invited to sample life at venues across the country, offering constructive - or otherwise - critiques of their stay.

Viewers of this week’s episodes will have seen Alan and Dave spend the night at guest houses in Burnley and a night on the Leeds/Liverpool canal.

Their exploits were filmed in February, but fans of the show had to wait until Friday night's episode to see what happened to Alan and Dave.

They came second in the competition.

Recalling his time filming the programmes, Alan told the Globe: "It's the first time I’ve ever done anything like this.

"It's not something I really needed to do, because we’re a busy guest house. So, I wouldn’t see the point of doing it again.

"My advice to anyone who is selected as a contestant on the show in future is just be yourself.

“It was good, hard work, but very enjoyable. The crew would start us off at around 7am, filming us as we prepared for each day and getting our comments.

“It was cold at times, too, particularly filming on the Leeds-Liverpool canal in the middle of February.

The show is a competition and as viewers saw, there was friction among the competitors.

Alan said: “We were just scousers, and with scousers you get cutting humour, which I don’t think they get in other parts of the country. So, it led to some tense moments.

“I enjoyed meeting the other contestants, but there were some confrontations. Personally, I did it on purpose, because I think it makes for good television.

“My nickname’s ‘Bomber’ - so I’ll throw something to a situation and see what happens.“ Alan, 62, has owned Dunsandles for 11 years.

Among its guests have been iconic 60s sixties singer Frank Ifield, comic legend Ken Dodd and former Dynasty actress Kate O’Mara - who have all performed at the nearby Floral Pavilion theatre over the years.

"They were nice people and said some great things about the hotel. It's great to think that we're such a popular hotel."

The second such contestant within a few hundred yards, as the rated Sherwood Guest House on Wellington Road took part a while back too & received positive feedback from the other participants. I missed the Dunsandles episode but it'll likely be repeated on one of the freeview channels. I hope it didn't let New Brighton down!
