The 27-year-old man was walking home along Wallasey Road in the early hours of Monday, May 5, when he saw a group of men stood outside a public house.

They shouted to him, then followed him onto Rullerton Road where they pushed him to the ground.

Police want to question three women who they believe may have seen the attack.

Detective Constable Chris O'Connor from Wirral CID, said: "This seems to be a motiveless attack on a man who was doing his best to mind his own business.

"The group had no hesitation in ganging up on him then carrying out a vicious assault and we are determined to bring the people responsible to justice.

"We believe the incident was witnessed by three women.

"There is no suggestion they were involved in any way but they may have vital information for our investigation and I would appeal to them to come forward.

"There may also have been other people in the area as it happened early on the first Bank Holiday of May and I would urge anyone else with information to get in touch."
