A WIRRAL secondary school is the first in the borough to receive accredited status for its work with pupils who have autism.

Clare Mount Specialist Sports College in Moreton learned of its success from the National Autistic Society, which carried out a review of the Moreton school's provision for pupils with the condition.

It met standards set by the National Autistic Society to measure the quality of autism specific education and support, following the latest standards of good practice both nationally and internationally.

Clare Mount is an established specialist school for students aged 11-19 with a range of needs including autism and moderate learning difficulties.

The report outlined several areas of strength, including teaching and learning methods, transition, family and support links, and the variety of lunchtime provision for the young people.

It also highlighted the constant hard work of all staff and their commitment to improving provision and achievement for pupils was highlighted, with the report stating: "The standard of teaching and expertise used in meeting the needs of students was inspiring."
