News of Wirral Cricket Club’s humiliation at being bowled out for just three runs has made headlines around the world.

The result went viral on social media yesterday after users started sharing images of Wirral’s spectacularly bleak scorecard.

Wirral were all-out for three against Haslington in the Cheshire League Third Division match on Saturday.

Now newspaper websites from India to Canada, Australia to Sri Lanka, are reporting the result.

Wirral Cricket Club’s first team managed 10 ducks and only a single run off the bat – by their number 11 – with the other two runs coming from leg bye extras.

The only consolation for Wirral is that theirs in not the lowest score ever recorded in a league match – that dubious accolade goes to Somerset club Langport, bowled out for zero in 1913.

The club itself took it in good spirit, tweeting: “1st XI lost by 105 runs today... Sadly the opposition only scored 108!”

Wirral captain Pete Clewes told the Daily Telegraph: “It was just a freak performance.

“We bowled well. We fielded well.

“We bowled them out for 108, and we were feeling perfectly confident when we went into bat, but for some reason we all just batted atrociously.

“It was extraordinary.”

Former Daily Mirror editor turned chat show host Piers Morgan picked up the story tweeting the scorecard accompanied by a “Well batted” comment.

He turned down an invitation from Wirral to put in a spell at the crease, tweeting “Sorry lads. My form’s just too good.”
