WIRRAL West MP Esther McVey is at the centre of a social media storm after she appeared to tweet during the memorial service to mark 25 years since the Hillsborough disaster.

The employment minister apparently tweeted an attack against the local Labour party at the same time shadow health secretary Andy Burnham was speaking to 30,000 people at Anfield.

She posted: "Wirral Labour can't be trusted" with a link to a blog post about upcoming local elections.

Some three hours later, and after trending on Twitter, she apologised saying: "Really regret the mistiming of local election press release. Apologies."

Her tweet met with anger on the network.

Among the first to respond was Radio 5 Live presenter Nicky Campbell.

He tweeted asking her "not watching the service?"

Another comment from @kateab said "That original tweet should be retitled 'why Esther McVey can't be trusted'."

And @annie wrote “justice for the 96 shame on you mcvey”

The story has been picked up by several national newspapers.
