FIREFIGHTERS battled for almost two hours to put out a Wirral grassland blaze, believed to have been started deliberately.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was called out to Bidston Hill shortly before 6pm today, Tuesday.

They discovered four separate seats of fire across 500 square metres of gorse and scrubland.

It took fire crews close to two hours to tackle the blaze.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway, although it is believed it was started deliberately.

Watch manager Andy Blythe, from Birkenhead community fire station, said: "While the fire itself is damaging to the environment, four appliances also had to attend this incident.

"Attending deliberate fires means that those fire appliances are not availablee to respond to other emergencies in the area."
