More than 700 signed up for Wirral Race For Life

Wirral Globe: Participants in last year's race. Participants in last year's race.

MORE than 700 women have signed up for this year's Wirral Race For Life in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The Globe-backed event will be held in Birkenhead Park on Sunday, July 27. Last year, 3443 women took part and raised a fantastic £153,104.

Its organisers need 3600 women and girls to stride out this time around to help raise £350,000. So far, 788 have signed up.

Jennifer Ward, Cancer Research UK's North West events manager, said: "Race for Life events are not competitive.

"They are not about being fit or fast. "Instead, they are an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.

"Participants may be walking, jogging or running but what's inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer."

Wirral nurse Julie Lloyd, who lost her mum and mother-in-law to cancer, took part last year.

She is unable to run this time around because of a back injury, but will shout encouragement from the sidelines on the day.

Urging mums, daughters, sisters and friends to register for the event she said: "Cancer has been very prominent throughout my life.

"I have lost family members and friends to the disease and as a community nurse I have supported and nursed lots of patients with cancer.

"Taking part in Race for Life was my way of fighting back against cancer for taking both my mum and mother-in-law.

"It was an incredibly emotional event, but I know they would have been proud of me and that by taking part I was able to help other families have more precious time with their loved ones."
