THE smiling face of a Wirral toddler given just months to live will be what spurs brothers Ian and Neil Campbell on when they take on a gruelling 5,500ft accent in aid of Claire House next month.

Full-time superhero Luke Campbell had just turned three-years-old when his family was told he may not live to see his fourth, after his rare heart conditioned worsened.

Luke - who had his first operation at just six-weeks-old – was originally given two years to live but last week his precious life was cut even shorter when doctors said he had just months left.

But despite his ill health, the Heswall tot continues to inspire those around him, no more so than his uncles Ian and Neil, who are gearing up to take on the 26.2 mile Excalibur challenge on May 10.

“Luke was born with a heart condition and he has had a number of major operations to help with this,” explained 28-year-old marketing manager Ian.

“We were given the devastating news that Luke only has a couple of months to live and this has obviously devastated all of his family.”

The Excalibur challenge will see the brothers tackle tough terrain that traverses the spectacular Clwydian Range of North Wales, all in aid of Claire House.

Ian and 32-year-old Neil decided to fundraise for the hospice to thank them for the help they have given brave Luke, which involved organising a visit from his favourite Disney character, Mickey Mouse.

“He has been such an inspiration to us and we want to give something back and hopefully inspire others to help the charity,” explained dad-of-one Ian.

“Luke is stubborn and a born fighter. He has upset the odds on a number of occasions and I fully expect him to do this again.”

Despite his heart condition, Ian says Luke is no different to any other three-year-old and loves nothing more than going to the park and visiting his grandparents.

“I refer to Luke as a full time superhero because he is – he has been through so much more than I have in my whole 28 years on Earth, and more than most people in their full lives.

“The grit and strength he has shown is simply out of this world.

“You will never see him upset - he is always happy and if I ever have a bad day I just look at Luke with a smile on his face.

“To put it simply he is an inspiration to myself and everyone that has met him.

“He really is a special little boy who I am honoured to call my nephew, Godson and mate.”
