RAIL services through Birkenhead North station are back to normal after disruption caused by debris on the track earlier this morning.

Services between West Kirby and New Brighton lines were subject to delays and cancellations after a pile of lightweight silver piping, made from a foam material, was found on the line.

Replacement bus services were withdrawn just after 9am and services are now running normally.

The debris has now been removed. An investigation is underway to establish how it ended up on the line.

A Merseyrail spokesman said: "The first train did actually hit the debris, but as it was lightweight there was no risk to passengers or driver or damage to the train.

"Services were disrupted while the debris was removed by Merseyrail staff, which meant the line had to be delectrified. We apologise to passengers for any inconvenience caused."
