A COLLECTIVE of West Kirby bands look set to be on the cusp of a hit single just days after creating a song in celebration of Liverpool FC’s success this season.

When Alfie Skelly from The Sundowners and The Coral’s James Skelly teamed up with a West Kirby singer and producer – known simply as ‘The Local Stigmatic’ – to record a song to soundtrack Liverpool’s wonderful season so far, they never imagined how successful it would be.

A 30-second snippet of their song, ‘We Are Liverpool (Poetry In Motion)’ was released as a ringtone on Saturday afternoon and by 9pm, it was number one in the UK Ringtone Charts ahead of Beyonce, Jay-Z, Pharrell and Katy Perry.

“Seven days ago, we had nothing,” explained The Local Stigmatic.

“We didn’t even have the idea for the song – we were just enjoying this amazing season the club has been having.

“Myself, The Sundowners, we’ve all crossed each other’s paths at different points as we all come from West Kirby.

“Just last Monday night we were talking about how there’s never really been an LFC song that has touched us, that’s really evoked every emotion of what it means to be a Liverpool fan.”

The band, who call themselves The Jft96Collective, has pledged to donate all of the profits from the ringtone and soon-to-be-released single to the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.

The Local Stigmatic added: “It started as a joke really, just mucking around recording the song and we thought, ‘Well, we’ll stick the chorus out on iTunes as a ringtone, maybe we’ll make a couple of hundred quid for the Hillsborough Justice Campaign’.

“Now, no one ever releases anything on weekends as everybody else has had a six day head-start so you’ve got zero change of making the charts.”

But they were wrong and have since been contacted by the heads of digital development at Liverpool FC, Soccer AM, former player and Tranmere manager John Aldridge and those involved in the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.

A two-minute teaser video released on YouTube on Tuesday attracted 2,500 hits in just one day.

“It was an amazing reaction, absolutely crazy stuff,” said the Local Stigmatic.

“Marketing wise, we also had the brainwave to ask some of the most interesting LFC website owners to contribute recordings of themselves singing the ringtone.

“We offered to mix all of them into the final version of the single, and they would help promote it on Twitter in return for it.”

More than 500 people have since got in touch and are singing in the final chorus of the full single release.

The Local Stigmatic added: “I can’t tell you how much of a labour of love this has been, and not just for me.

“Everyone has been working for free – the artwork, the music video – nobody has taken a penny.

“It’s just really united a huge community of true reds in their captivation of what we’re seeing on the pitch.”

The exact number of ringtones sold is not yet known and the band will not know how well the single sells until the end of June.

“We’re still talking with the club in terms of how they can find a way to use the song,” explained the Local Stigmatic.

“As long as we can give a decent sum of money to the families, we’re all keeping our expectations modest, but we’ve got a few plans in the pipeline.”

He added: “All in all, it’s already surpassed our expectations, and the responses we’re getting from the video have touched us more than you would believe.

“It means a lot that Liverpool fans have taken to this.”
