A REVIEW of council procedures is underway after joiner took his own life by jumping from the roof of Birkenhead Town Hall.

An inquest into the death of Michael Amos, of Hawthorn Road, Tranmere, heard that the 57-year-old had intended to take his own life.

He had been working on the town hall roof last Thursday, March 27, when his body was found by a passer-by on Brandon Street, shortly before 5pm.

An inquest held in Liverpool on Tuesday heard Mr Amos had died from multiple injuries and from his own actions.

David Armstrong, Wirral Council’s assistant chief executive, said roof access would be reviewed following the incident.

He said: “Mick was a very well-liked and respected employee of one of our maintenance sub-contractors who work across many council buildings and schools.

“Our deepest condolences and thoughts remain with his family at this awful time.

“An immediate investigation was carried out following the tragic incident last week.

“Mick had recently been carrying out works at Birkenhead Town Hall, including on the roof, and he had a detailed knowledge of access points around the building.

“In addition to the checks we have carried out at Birkenhead Town Hall, we will also be reviewing roof access across all council buildings that have three floors or more.”
