A BUSY Wallasey road is to closure for 10 weeks to allow engineers to fix a collapsed sewer pipe that has led to the road surface above subsiding.

Leasowe Road will be closed from Tuesday, April 1 while United Utilities carry out the emergency work, which they say is essential to prevent the road surface from becoming dangerous.

The dual carriageway will be closed both ways at Castleway North, with electronic signs warning drivers and informing them of a diversion down Pasture Road, Hoylake Road and the A554.

Letters have also been sent to nearby residents.

One lane will be reopened for a short time on Sunday, April 6 to allow exclusive access to the bikers taking part in the annual Egg Run charity event.

Mark Donaghy, from United Utilities, said: “Motorists driving down Leasowe Road may have spotted this depression over the past few weeks. It’s really important we sort this out sooner rather than later for everybody’s safety.

“We know this closure is going to be frustrating for drivers, but please bear with us while we try and get the repair finished as quickly as possible.”

Specialist tunnelling techniques will be used to dig down to the pipe and will cause less disruption that creating open trenches.

The road will be closed in both directions to allow access to the sewer, which runs underneath the central reservation, and to ensure the safety of the engineers – who are said to be working seven days a week to complete the repair as quickly as possible.

United Utilities has also started work on Tarran Way North on the Tarran Industrial Estate.

The road will be closed for three months and a diversion will be in place.

The work is the latest stage of the £5m programme to prevent sewer flooding.
