A COUPLE who have spent barely a day apart since they first met more than 60 years ago are today celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Nick Cheshire was working as a welder at Cammell Laird when he was first introduced to wife Beryl when he was just 26-years-old and she was 19.

They instantly fell in love and soon tied the knot on March 27, 1954.

After spending 12 months living with Nick’s parents in his hometown of Birkenhead – the maximum Beryl, now 80, vowed to spend there – the diamond duo bought their own home in Eastham, where they have lived ever since.

Beryl, originally from Liverpool, and 87-year-old Nick, who has recently moved into Derwent Lodge nursing home in New Ferry, were inseparable, spending every waking moment with one another.

They went on to have three children, five grand children and one great grandchild.

Despite the difficulties the pair now face, Beryl says they have happy memories to look back on.

“We are still as in love as when we first met,” said Beryl.

“We’ve had a good marriage and have done quite a bit of travelling – we started going on cruises just before our 50th wedding anniversary and I’m so glad we did because Nick has those memories now.

“We did a cruise to Alaska and went through the Rockies – it was absolutely wonderful. We’ve got a caravan in North Wales too which we used to visit a lot.”

The pair marked their milestone surrounded by family and friends at Derwent Lodge on Thursday, complete with a congratulatory card from the Queen.

Sharing their secret to a long and happy marriage, Beryl added: “We consider each other, we don’t go off and do things without each other – we have always done everything together.”
